Overview
Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, recently completed a $500 million, 250,000 square-foot addition. A completely new unit including a helipad, new cafeteria, family lounges, and over 70 hospital rooms was added. I was approached by the hospital board and donors to create a continuation of bronze children in front of the hospital, facing one of the busiest streets in Omaha. In 2010 I completed five bronze children that are situated on the corner of the hospital, featuring acrylic and steel umbrellas. With the addition of the new bronze sculptures, there are now 11 bronze children total. At night, the sculptures are lit with programmable LED color-changing lights. The sculptures range in size from five feet tall, to eight feet tall. Two of the bronze children feature dogs that are patiently sitting at their side. It is my hope that this piece remains a landmark for the hospital for many years to come. My goal for this piece is to create a warm, joyful, and uplifting environment for the patients, visitors, and medical staff.
